New organic rose veal range
Launching in May 2022, the new organic rose veal range is the latest way the team at Somerset’s award-winning Coombe Farm Organic are developing sustainable produce. Making use of male dairy cows, the veal is fed a diet of whole organic milk, grass and protein-rich cake, so it produces highly nutritious meat with a fine-grained, smooth texture. The meat is more tender and leaner than beef with a melt-in-the-mouth delicate flavour and distinctive rose-pink tint.
Ryan Sloman-Brown, Farming Manager at Coombe Farm Organic explains, “As an organic farm our focus has always been on farming in a sustainable way with the highest animal welfare standards. That’s why we’ve decided to produce Soil Association certified organic rose veal. Veal was once a much-criticized meat because it involved the fattening of young cows in crates – a highly unethical and cruel practice. The way we are rearing our veal is the antithesis of this style of factory farming. We are not actively breeding veal, we are closing the loop on our dairy business by finding an ethical solution to the issue of surplus bull calves. Living for around 10 months, our calves forage in small sociable groups. It is because the animals have access to pasture and grain the meat is tinted pink. Producing organic rose veal is the next stage of our organic farm journey and we hope that people enjoy trying it.”
