Suncreens with an SPF (sun protection factor) have been available for over 50 years, helping prevent severe sunburns.

However, recent studies indicate that SPF is just one of three crucial components in an effective sunscreen. Current regulations mandate that sunscreens must also guard against UVA rays, which penetrate the skin more deeply, leading to premature aging, wrinkles, and cancer.

Additionally, new research highlights the importance of natural botanical antioxidants in protecting against sun damage.

The Sun Protection Factor indicates how well a sunscreen shields us from UVB rays. Specifically, it tells us how long after application we need to reapply sunscreen to avoid getting burned. For instance, if you typically burn after 10 minutes in the sun, with SPF 30, you should reapply after 300 minutes (10 x 30) or 5 hours

A good sunscreen should also offer ‘broad spectrum’ protection against UVA rays. In Europe, a sun-cream will display a UVA symbol in a circle if it provides broad-spectrum protection.

Higher SPF means more UVA protection. SPF 15-29 is considered ‘moderate,’ while 30-59 is ‘high’ and offers ‘broad spectrum’ UVA and UVB protection.

Regardless of the temperature, it’s wise to seek shade between 12-3 pm, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and opt for light, loose clothing. A t-shirt provides SPF 30 protection!

Choosing clean, natural, organic sunscreen is important for several reasons:

1. Health Benefits

Reduced Exposure to Harmful Chemicals

Conventional sunscreens often contain chemicals like oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens, which can be absorbed into the skin and may disrupt hormones, cause allergic reactions, or even contribute to long-term health issues. Organic sunscreens typically use mineral-based ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which sit on the skin's surface and act as physical barriers without being absorbed.

Non-Nano Particles

Many natural sunscreens use non-nano particles of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are too large to penetrate the skin. This reduces the risk of particles entering the bloodstream and potentially causing health issues.

2. Environmental Protection

Coral Reef Safety

Chemicals in conventional sunscreens, such as oxybenzone and octinoxate, are known to cause coral bleaching and damage marine ecosystems. Organic sunscreens often avoid these harmful ingredients, making them safer for coral reefs and marine life.

Biodegradability

Natural and organic sunscreens are usually made from biodegradable ingredients, which break down more easily in the environment. This helps reduce pollution and the overall impact on ecosystems.

3. Skin Benefits

Nourishing Ingredients

Organic sunscreens often contain natural oils and botanical extracts that nourish and moisturize the skin. Ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil, and shea butter provide additional benefits, such as soothing the skin and reducing inflammation.

Fewer Allergic Reactions

Natural sunscreens are less likely to contain synthetic fragrances, dyes, and preservatives that can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. This makes them suitable for people with sensitive skin or those prone to allergies.

4. Ethical and Sustainable Practices

Eco-Friendly Production

Many brands that produce organic sunscreens prioritize sustainable and eco-friendly practices. This includes using renewable resources, reducing waste, and ensuring environmentally responsible manufacturing processes.

Cruelty-Free

Organic sunscreen brands are often committed to cruelty-free practices, meaning they do not test their products on animals. This aligns with the values of many consumers who prioritize animal welfare.

5. Transparency and Trust

Clear Labeling

Organic sunscreens tend to have more transparent labeling, allowing consumers to know exactly what ingredients are used. This transparency builds trust and helps consumers make informed choices about the products they use on their skin.
